As featured in "Steam Railway" magazine's top 10 products of 2003!

Steamy Sounds CD LSJ001 is a collection of line-side recordings made at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway over a three-year period between 2000 and 2002, using a portable minidisc recorder and a digital microphone.

For those of you who know the N.Y.M.R. line, we hope this CD will not only remind you of the sound of the trains themselves, but also of the spring birdsong, the rushing water and the echoes in deep valleys. For those of you unfamiliar with the line, we hope it will convey something of the excitement of witnessing steam locomotives hard at work on the railway's severe gradients, and encourage you to pay a visit.

Track 8 – 12th May 2002

"We hear Pickering Beck in the background rushing under the railway at Bridge 14, north of Levisham station. The unmistakable deep pitch of 29's whistle heralds the approach of the 11.20 Pickering to Grosmont train. As the carriages pass by another exhaust comes into earshot – 65894 is working hard at the back. A light aircraft drifts over the valley as the train continues towards Yorfalls Wood."

Track 17 – 7th Oct 2000

"The 16.50 train from Grosmont is well on time and already approaching as we start recording at Darnholme. 60007 is in easy control of the lightly loaded train, storming up the 1 in 49 gradient under the road bridge. The driver whistles for Goathland station as the train passes beneath Mill Scar. A cool breeze picks up and the sound of rushing water is heard behind us in Eller Beck."

Our second release on compact disc:

Steamy Sounds CD LSJ002, our second CD, was released in May 2005. Like the North Yorkshire Moors CD, it is a collection of digital recordings taken at the lineside. All of the tracks were recorded between 2000 and 2004.

The Severn Valley Railway in Shropshire follows the river valley south from Bridgnorth to Bewdley, then curves away eastwards to terminate alongside the Network Rail station in Kidderminster. On the way it passes through classic English countryside.

The line is generally remote from main roads, permitting numerous recording locations where traffic noise will not intrude. However, light aircraft from the nearby airfield at Halfpenny Green regularly pass overhead. Generally this spoils a recording but, just occasionally, it helps to set the scene in the listener's ear. Birdsong, in contrast, never detracts from a recording and there is an abundance of it all down the line, as you will hear.

One special attraction of the Severn Valley Railway is trains running right through the night at gala weekends. We have found that breezy days often fall still after nightfall, and the sound of the trains carries much further, aided by a moister atmosphere. Several of the tracks on this CD were recorded under the cover of darkness, with just the owls and the trains for company.

Track 2 – 15th Feb 2004

"On a fine Sunday morning in early Spring, 42968 is in charge of the 10.45 from Kidderminster, and is heard climbing towards Eardington summit which, at 210 feet, is the highest point on the line. The loco whistles as it approaches Crossing Cottage, just short of the top."

Track 17 – 18th Mar 2000

"The Mid-Hants Railway's 41321 is on loan for the 2000 "Branch Line" Gala. Here it is piloting resident loco 46521 on the 14.18 from Kidderminster on the Saturday. A gentle breeze blows as the two engines make a brisk departure up the bank from Highley Station."
